Victorian carved shell Cameo Large 14 Carat Gold mount Museum quality

This is a gorgeous, Victorian carved hell cameo brooch. It is finely carved and set within an ornate pierced and scrolling mount. The mount tests as 12-14 carat gold but is not marked. The pin and hinge are original and strong- it fastens with a "C" clasp and is fitted with a solid gold safety chain.

The subject matter is very unusual. i have not seen it before and would really like to know the exact scene that it refers to if anyone could let me know. The scene I think maybe of Roman actors playing a tragedy before an audience sitting around a banqueting table. We are backstage so can see the audience reactions to the drama, one is weeping, one appears to be drunk. There is a great depth of scene in the relief, it is a very skillfully carved piece.

This interpretation maybe be incorrect- please let me know if I am mistaken. 

This is certainly a rare and exceptional cameo brooch and will be a great find for the right person.

Condition: Excellent condition. There is a slight smoothing to the high points of the carving.

Measurements: 7.2cm by 6cm and about 1.5cm in depth
